Nestled on the highest point in Tagaytay, is the popular People’s Park in the Sky. The park used to be called the Palace in the Sky during the era of former president Ferdinand Marcos. The mansion was built as a vacation home for the Marcoses and what better place to put it than the highest point in the the area. The area has sweeping views of Tagaytay and Cavite. In fact, on a clear day, it is possible to see the gleaming towers of Manila from here.
The Palace in the Sky was never finished and succeeding administration have not done anything to improve the place for fear of reprisal from the people. Instead it has been left to slowly moulder the years away. Years of neglect have turned this “palace” into some kind of modern day ruins complete with moss and weeds. To remove the Marcos stigma from the structure, the place was renamed as the People’s Park in the Sky, yet no improvements have been made to this place. Although a telecommunications tower has been placed on top of the mansion since it has a very good location.
The park has a nominal entrance fee of 15 Pesos, where the money goes I do not know, certainly it is not for the upkeep of the place. During my visit there were busload of students visiting the place. I knew it was a bad idea for me to visit on the weekend but I didn’t really have much choice.
