The Abbey of Saint Peter in Salzburg is a historic and surprising place to visit in Salzburg, It is included in the UNESCO World Heritage site listing of the Historic Center of the City of Salzburg. Because the site is so old there are portions which can be dated separately. The cemetery is a prime example of this since there is a section which is “old”, and then there is “really old” which is a burial site carved out of rock. I have finished visiting the really old burial site and I was just making my way through the more recent cemetery.
For a cemetery this old, I am surprised that is this small. I suppose that not everyone would be accommodated here and had to be buried somewhere else. Because of its status as part of an abbey, the cemetery here would be considered a good place to rest the dead. As you might expect, the more prominent people would be found here. Perhaps none would be more prominent here that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s sister, Maria Anna Mozart, nicknamed Nannerl. I saw her name several times earlier in the day when I was visiting Mozart’s birthplace and I can see that she played an important part in his life. The cemetery itself is a peaceful and quiet place within the city. Certainly worth dropping by here when you have a chance.
