As old as the Abbey of Saint Peter in Salzburg is, there seems to be some place even older than the abbey. The abbey was established around the seventh century and it has an attached cemetery. However, visitors can find out that there is a structure which came from an even older time. There is a pathway carved out of the rock of the hill behind the cemetery. Parts of the pathway feel like an old mining path. There are some holes carved out of the tunnel as well, forming a window where you can see the church and parts of the city center.

The path eventually leads to an inner chamber where there appears to be an altar of some sort. Although there was some lighting inside it was dark and hard to see what is actually here. I can see the altar where I believe some religious celebration would take place. To the right of the altar, there are the actual catacombs. It was too dark to see if there was anything written on the tomb stones. I think there would be else they won’t be able to tell which one is which. As you can see from the photos, this isn’t exactly a place where I would like to hang out in, especially alone. It was dark and somewhat damp. I don’t want it to be any brighter either lest I actually see something I don’t want to.
