I was pleasantly surprised to stumble into what appears to be the oldest church in the city of Salzburg. The church at the Abbey of Saint Peter is almost a thousand years old, though it won’t look like it. The church has been around for so long that it has been renovated several times. Though the interiors have heavy Romanesque structures, the design of the ceiling is Rococo. I thought this made it one of the most attractive churches that I have visited this trip. I think it even beats the cathedral in terms of attractiveness.
The fact that the church is attached to an abbey is also rather curious since I would expect these places to be a bit more frugal compared to a cathedral which used by the archbishop. It is a pity that I arrived at the church close to evening as it was already getting quite dark outside. It was already very attractive now but I think the design would show even more if it was brighter outside. Despite it not being a cathedral, some prominent people were buried here with one of them being Saint Rupert, the patron saint of Salzburg. as well as the sister of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Maria Anna Mozart. I only found this out after I left the church since it was dark and without a lot of signs, it was very easy to miss details like these.
