I managed to visit the UNESCO World Heritage site listed Hohensalzburg Fortress just before it closed for the night. It is considered to be one of the largest castles in Europe and the world. It is almost a small miracle that I managed to see everything in the little time that I had. By the time I got back down, it was already night time. I was once again near the Salzburg Cathedral where there are Christmas markets all around. As you can probably see from this blog, I have been to quite a few of these European Christmas markets and I can never get tired of them. The markets are very lively and have become tourists destinations in their own right.
As you might expect, the Christmas Markets here are seasonal which is one of the reasons why I decided to visit in December. I don’t get to see Christmas markets the rest of the year, so I thought to just make it part of my visit. There are three main squares which surround the Salzburg Cathedral. Two of them were set up with Christmas Markets and I have actually passed through them earlier. I knew I would be back in the evening since, of course, Christmas Markets are best visited at night. Not only are the lights are all on but it would also be a great time to get food for dinner. I haven’t decided if I will actually be doing that, but there will always be that option.
