Statue of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart at Mozartplatz

A lot of people may know this, but Austria is Mozart country and within Austria, the city of Salzburg is the one most associated with this genius. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is the city’s most famous resident. He was born and grew up in the city of Salzburg. This is also the reason why Salzburg is forever tied to music. Indeed, even the classic musical the Sound of Music has scenes filmed in Salzburg. If that doesn’t tell you how important music is to Salzburg, then I don’t know what is. There are several places which are Mozart related here in the city but I think it would be best to start in one which is named after him – Moazartplatz.

As the name implies, the Mozartplatz is a square named after Mozart. There is a statue of Mozart here that is put upon a pedestal. The statue was built for his fiftieth death anniversary and parts of it were even sponsored by the king of Bavaria Ludwig I. So what about the statue, well, it is a statue, that is for sure. Apart from the obvious statue that is erected here, there is little to associate this square with Mozart himself, one of the houses here in the square was occupied by his widow but that was it. At the time of my visit, there were a Christmas market here and I only stumbled into the statue only because I was going around the Christmas market. I think important places like these can get lost because of the market. Even the statue itself doesn’t have much room around it because of the market.
