Goldenes Dachl in the Old Town of Innsbruck

If any of you have been reading my blog, then you would know that I have a thing for visiting UNESCO World Heritage sites. I use them as some sort of guide to help me figure out where to go when I visit a new country. Although, I would usually include these places as part of my itinerary, I don’t have to limit myself to them, especially if there other places are too far away. Innsbruck, although it is an imperial city, it isn’t host to a UNESCO World Heritage site, at least not yet. It is however, on the tentative list. Hopefully, it would be part of that exclusive list someday.

One of the structures which got Innsbruck nominated is the Goldenes Dachl or the Golden Roof. What is so special about this roof. The Goldenes Dachl is in the heart of the old town, no doubt that anyone visiting the old town square would definitely see this. The Goldenes Dachl is what is called an oriel. Those windows which protrude from the walls of a building. This one was built for the wedding of Emperor Maximillian I. The Goldenes Dachl as the name implies has a roof which has a golden color. This is actually made of copper tiles. The oriel is decorated with various figures even depicting the emperor and his wives.

The Goldenes Dachl is meant for use by the emperor so that he and his guests would be able to observe the town square below. Obviously, these days, the Goldenes Dachl is no longer used by emperor but the building itself is used by civilians now. It is great that the Goldenes Dachl itself is still maintained and protected. You can even see how it is covered by screen so keep birds from nesting here. I will be back this evening and I know that the Goldenes Dachl will shine even brighter at night.
