I was walking around somewhere near the old town of the city of Innsbruck and I somehow ended up at one of the most important streets in the city – Maria Theresa Street. The street is named after Empress Maria Theresa. The street is lined with numerous modern day shops and it is a pleasure to walk in. The street used to be one of the main access points to the old city when there were still city walls surrounding the old town. These days, it is a pedestrian shopping street and certainly one of the prettiest shopping streets I have seen. It helps that there appear to be snow capped mountains at one end of the street. In reality the mountains are much further away but the mountains have become part of the view of the famous street.
At one point of the Maria Theresa Street, there is the Saint Anne’s Column. This column was erected to commemorate the withdrawal of the Bavarians from the area. The column is now a well known landmark and the perfect place to take a break from all that shopping that can be had here. I was pleasantly surprised to see how many people were out here considering how cold it is. It is nice to see this for a change since other places I would visit would tend to be deserted this time of the year.
