The Way to Salzwelten Hallstatt

Walking to the Salzwelten Hallstatt

I was a bit surprised to know that the Salzwelten Hallstatt or at least the salt mine component was not where the funicular would drop us off. In fact, there is a fair bit of a walking to do to get to the salt mine. I know I am complaining now when I had a convenience of a funicular to bring me here but seven thousand years ago when the salt mine was very active, there was no funicular and people would have to climb all the way here to get to the mine. Granted it is much more convenient to go there now, there is still some distance to the mine itself.

The way to the Salzwelten Hallstatt is well marked by signs. And even if the mountaintop is covered in snow, the main path itself was cleared of it. There can still be some slippery parts but overall it was good. The entrance to the salt mine itself is hidden away in a more modern structure where the main visitor center is. It almost looks like a cabin in the woods like the other structures here on top. Inside the visitor center, people are herded in depending on the next available tour. The next room is where everyone needs to get dressed in white uniform. It is meant to protect people from the environment inside the mine because it can be dirty. Also, we were warned that the temperature inside the mine is around 8 degrees Celsius, so make sure to put the uniform on top of your jackets.
