Schnitzel with Potatoes at Schirmbar Hallstatt

Night fell quickly in the beautiful village of Hallstatt. The lights in this fairy tale of a village started lighting up. Although it was a still a little early for dinner, I decided to start looking for a place to eat. As I was walking down the main street of Hallstatt, I noticed that there weren’t too many places to eat here. It is a small village and restaurants can only count on tourists to survive. After all, Hallstatt isn’t a large village. Most of the people who descended on Hallstatt for the day have already gone home, presumably back to Salzburg. The tourists who are left here have to start looking for a place to eat.

What little restaurants are in Hallstatt, turned out to be not that affordable. I think I can understand the mentality behind it, since they can only serve this many people at a time, it would make sense for them to have higher prices. This doesn’t mean I like it. I ended up going to this place called Schirmbar Hallstatt, which means Umbrella Bar. The name comes from the fact that customers sit outside under umbrellas. It was winter and fortunately, they have heat lamps for visitors. It don’t think it was enough though. I got myself a plate of schnitzel with fries. The schnitzel is basically breaded meat chop. I can’t tell what meat it was but it certainly didn’t taste like beef. I would think this was chicken schnitzel. I guess if they flatten the meat so much, it would be difficult to tell what it actually was.

To push it all down, I had a cup of mulled wine which is a staple during Christmas. The schnitzel itself wasn’t bad at all, it seems to have been fried properly. My only problem with it was that I needed to eat it fast since we were all outside and it would cool down very quickly. Considering that it was “just” schnitzel, and that the venue is all outside, it was not cheap. I think this is the main issue with staying over in Hallstatt. There aren’t too many choices here and whatever choice there is here will turn out to be expensive.
