I wasn’t exactly feeling Mathildenhöhe. It is officially an artists’ colony. What this means is that several artists would be living here and making their art. Perhaps the idea is to inspire the artists by putting them all in one place and maybe learn from each other. There are several structures here and I think the results are very diverse. The master mind of this whole place is Ernst Ludwig, he was the Grand Duke of Hesse. He came up with the idea of gathering well known artists together and making them live together. As the grand duke, the idea was to improve the area by adding art. This was also expected to help with the economy.
There would be regular exhibitions here in Mathildenhöhe at the currently under renovation exhibition hall. Obviously people may want to purchase the art here, there by generating income for the community directly and indirectly. One of the structures that was constructed here is the Ernst Ludwig House. I don’t know if Ernst Ludwig actually stayed here but it seems to be named after him. There are some apartments here where some artists would stay. There are also meeting rooms for exhibitions or whatever. The doors don’t seem to be open here again but it is said that the artists that lived here in Mathildenhöhe had a hand in the construction and design of the Ernst Ludwig House.
