I think I have been around modern cities enough to know what they usually have. One of the things which I have come to rely on is the subway. Frankfurt is a major world city and it definitely has a subway which they call the U-bahn. The U-bahn is directly integrated with the rail network of Germany which makes it a very convenient place to stay in. I wanted to go for dinner somewhere and I didn’t want to walk in the freezing night so I decided to try the subway. Most subways have more or less standardized on how they work, you figure out where you need to go, buy a ticket either from a kiosk or from a live person, then get on the correct train and go to your destination.
One thing I noticed with European cities is that they have a tiered fare system where the fare is X amount depending on what zone you are in and where you intend to go. There is also a time based one where you can ride all you want for a given number of hours. I decided to go for the latter one since it seemed to be cheaper. I am not sure if there is any benefit to offering a time limited ticket but I took it nonetheless. The platform area was nice and clean, not to mention spacious. I can imagine how crowded it can get here especially in a city as big as Frankfurt. Inside the train was much like any other train. The cars were big and spacious. In fact, it felt more like a bus rather than a train. For some reason, the train wasn’t that crowded considering it is rush hour, maybe all those people working from home had an effect on passenger numbers.
