I took a ferry from Sankt Goar to cross the Rhine. This seems to be the only way to cross the river at least in this area. I think there are bridges somewhere but they don’t seem to be plentiful. I would not be good to have bridges ruin a beautiful landscape either. With a ferry, it provides a quaint way to cross the river, as well as allowing passengers to appreciate the natural beauty of the area. The crossing doesn’t take that long anyway. It is over before you know it.
While the ferry crosses the river very frequently, it needs to do so while there aren’t any ships in the way. I can see that the Rhine can be a very busy river as far as transportation is concerned but that I something to consider when making the crossing. The ships don’t travel fast enough that there would be strong waves that might make the ferry unstable, not good especially when you consider that the ferry also carries vehicles to cross the river. The opposite bank of the river also has a ferry terminal just like Sankt Goar. The terminal actually hooks on to the ferry to prevent it from moving around when it is docked. The gate of the ferry is then opened and passengers are free to jump out when it is open.
