I was going around Inishowen Peninsula to check out some interesting places I haven’t been to. I’m in the village of Ballyliffin which has this long stretch of beach. I noticed that Google Maps shows that there is a castle on the other end of the beach so I was interested to see it. I passed by the village of Ballindavoe where you can have a look at the estuary that empties into the Atlantic. It is really a sight to behold. The road to the castle isn’t very good. It is basically a rough road all the way. There were times that I had to wonder if the directions were correct since there doesn’t seem to be any castle nearby but just keep following the road and you won’t miss it.
The castle area has a coarse parking lot but nothing my car can’t manage. I was surprised to see that other people have made it here as well. I expected that this place isn’t very well known. The castle sits on the edge of the water and it makes you wonder why castles here tend to be built near the wter. I understand that it would be easier to defend the castle if you don’t have to worry about the side where the water is but I worry about how stable the structure is since the waves here can be rough and the foundations might start to erode away. Seeing that the castle is still here, they probably knew what they were doing.
