The city of Rabat is named as a UNESCO World Heritage site because how it combined the old and the new into a modern capital. The offical title is Rabat Modern Capital and Historic City. It is described to be a wonderful mixture of Arab culture and western ideas. Morocco is a very good example of this since it is a veritable melting pot of influences. The Arabs obviously brought the Muslim faith and culture here, while the French and Spanish also have strong influences as you can see in their language and also the architectural style. Fortunately, a lot of these places are still intact and you can see them in several places in Rabat.
I would be more interested in the older stuff. One of the most prominent landmarks in Rabat is the Hassan Tower. The Hassan Tower was surprisingly not built in the old medina. I would have assumed that historic structures like these would have been built in the older part of the city. I haven’t seen a photo of the Hassan Tower, and I thought that if it isn’t in the medina then it might be a newer structure even a skyscraper. I would have to make the walk from the promenade to Hassan Tower. While the tower is not that far from the promenade, the promenade itself can be quite long. So be prepared for a little walking.
