Lake McDonald is probably one of the prettiest lakes I have ever seen. Like a lot of the lakes in the region, Lake McDonald was a product of the last ice age. The glaciers carved out a gully which was later filled by glacial meltwater. These days it is a huge tourist attraction but at the same time is a protected area. The waters of Lake McDonald are one of the clearest and cleanest in the United States. A lot of it has to do with relatively low number of life in the lake itself. This is also due to the purity of the water itself. It is very relaxing to sit on the shores of Lake McDonald. There were a few benches here but I assume it easily gets filled up in the summer.
I was hoping to see some wildlife here but those encounters have been few and far in between. The ones that I have seen are small animals like birds and squirrel. They are nice and all but I was hoping to see larger animals and Glacier National Park has plenty of those. There would be the odd bird on the lake itself but they are usually too far away to see. Besides, if you go in the water they would just fly away. I see some people brought canoes to paddle in the lake. There is very tight security when it comes to boating on the lake. Sometimes canoes might have some creatures stuck underneath and the park rangers would have to inspect these boats to make sure there are no invasive species on it. Certain species of freshwater mussels have invaded other lakes and are known to reproduce rapidly thereby changing the lake itself. Obviously the park rangers don’t want this to happen and they make sure to inspect anything that goes into the water.
