After a few days of frantic moving from one place to another, I was finally slowing it down so I enjoy my vacation or what’s left of it. I have seen quite a few places here in Portugal and I was quite surprised as to how nice this place was. There were a lot of historical places and there were even a some natural scenery which I wasn’t expecting in this visit. However, what probably surprised me the most was the food here. I know next to nothing about Portuguese food when I came here but from the restaurants that I visited, I have come to learn more about Portuguese food.
Perhaps nothing is as iconic as peri peri chicken. Basically, it is supposed to grilled chicken. I was thinking how good can it get if they are just grilling it. Turns out it can get very good. I found this place called Bonjardim which was just off a metro station. It seems that it was supposed to be a very good place of peri peri chicken and I wanted to try it out. The restaurant seemed to be one of those that didn’t bother to renovate their place. It still looks like as it was from back then after all what is important is the food. There is indoor and outdoor seating. I got a seat outside and ordered their chicken. The chicken turned out to be roasted. The meat was quite flavorful but I think what made it even more special was that chili oil. I was hesitant to use the oil as sauce for health reasons but it was there for a reason. Not before long, I was slathering the chicken with the tasty chili oil. It was definitely very different from the peri peri chicken I had in restaurants, and I think this is the best I had so far. I’m sorry that I didn’t go for a whole chicken since it was so good. Maybe I could come back next time.
