The Saint-Trophime Chruch is Arles in one of the important structures in the UNESCO World Heritage site listed city of Arles. There are a few Roman monuments here in Arles and I was visiting them one by one. The church here used to be a cathedral when the seat of the bishop was still in Arles. The church was retained though it is no longer has the rank of cathedral. The inside of the church has a lot of sculptures and they seemed to be quite impressive. It seems that the church is best known for its interiors. Unfortunately, there weren’t a lot of signs pointing out what I am seeing.
What I didn’t know was that there was yet another part of the church grounds which was famous. This was the cloister. I could imagine that priests and monks would be walking along the cloisters contemplating God. There used to be a time that the priests and monks would live within the church complex so a little open space would be appreciated. The cloister is marked by numerous columns which allow the light into the cloister while keeping the people dry. A closer look at the columns would show how complex the carvings were. This was much in line with the art that was in the church itself.
