We were shown the sleeping quarters of the prisoners at the Auschwitz. It seems the Nazis were forced to build these sleeping quarters instead of just letting them sleep on the floor where they were before. It can be very cold in Poland and the floor is certainly not something you want to be sleeping on. I wasn’t sure how they ended up with beds but it could have been a self serving purpose of keeping the prisoners alive or someone decided to be a little nicer. The next room we were shown where the prisoners would wash.
The toilets were just lined up side by side. There were no cubicles here so everyone can see what you are doing. The guards don’t gave much about the prisoners dignity so why bother with cubicles. I didn’t see showers here, perhaps the prisoners only got to bathe in the washing area. These facilities may seem like “it’s not that bad” but it only came after a lot of pressure. Could it be that this might have led to the eventual extermination of the prisoners? After all, the guards won’t have to take care of the prisoners if they will execute them anyway.
