Inside the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp
The Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp has got to be the tallest structure in the entire city. Belfries here in Belgium tend to be very tall in what seems to be a show of power. Curiously the Belfries of Begium and France tend to feature non relgious buildings. The Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp seems to be one of the exceptions. The cathedral is located in the old town center of Antwerp which seems to be remarkably well preserved. It isn’t the museum town that Bruges turned out to be but a lot of the old structures were still preserved. The centerpiece of the old town is definitely the cathedral.

The Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp a Gothic cathedral construction of which started in 1521. The cathedral is remarkably very well preserved and maintained. The original plans for this cathedral was for two towers, unfortunately, the plans for the second tower were aborted because of a fire. What was to be the second tower just stopped at the roof and ended up looking totally different from the first tower. At the time of my visit there seem to be some kind of disposal going on as there was a large disposal container in front of the cathedral which didn’t go away until long after we left the cathedral. The facade of the cathedral was very ornate as to be expected of a Gothic cathedral.
