Despite my efforts to enjoy going around Ghent, I can’t help but be disappointed since the weather was so miserable. I thought I managed to escape the miserable weather in Ireland but the weather here in Ghent was just as miserable. The weather was already starting to turn bad when we were departing from Brussels, it seems it has stayed in Ghent for the time being. We managed to go around the town center even if the weather was miserable but the rain is starting to come down so we thought it would be better to head indoors first. My friend who recommended that I visit Ghent said to go to Het Waterhuis aan de Bierkant. Try saying that, failing that, we just used the satnav to figure out where it is. Turns out it has a very nice place beside the river.
Het Waterhuis aan de Bierkant is a beer house. I feel sorry that we didn’t have accommodations here but what is done is done. The beer house isn’t that big the ambience is quite nice. We order yet another type of beer here. My friend had the Kwak which comes in a tall narrow neck glass and I had the Westmalle Trippel. The enjoyable thing about Belgian beers is that they come in their own unique glasses. I have yet to drink them from a mug here. In fact, most of the beers here are drunk from glasses not unlike wine glasses. A lot of people order the Kwak if only for the unique experience of drinking from the glass. The Westmalle is a trappist beer, which basically means monks made it. Monks like their beer strong and the Westamlle is no different. Somehow I managed to survive this trip without getting drunk yet. Not small feat considering how supposedly little I normally drink. I think it would have been nice to hang out at this beer house but it was getting late and I was getting hungry.
