Realistic Exhibits at the Tithe Barn in the Medieval Town of Provins

We finally begun our exploration of the medieval town of Provins. We have already completed our exploration of the impressive city walls of the town. It was time to explore the inside of the town. There are a few important places to visit in this town and it seems my companions already have an idea of where to go. The town of Provins, as most medieval towns go, isn’t terribly big, this makes it easier to explore on foot. Our first stop is a barn. A barn, as in barns in farms? I wasn’t sure what that was meant to be. The barn here has an audio guide, which was quite useful for us to understand what was going on. From the outside the barn didn’t seem to be terribly interesting, apparently, it is the inside which tells the story.

The barn here is known as the Tithe Barn. This structure used to be an indoor market, where people would come to sell their goods. The medieval town of Provins was a well known center for trade and people from all over Europe would come to sell their wares here. The “tithe” from the name comes from the fact that the barn was later used as a warehouse for the taxes or tithes which were collected from the harvests.
