The Tiger Leaping Gorge has been something of a mystery to me. When I was a kid, I would hear of this place but I couldn’t even picture it in my mind. Why “tiger”, why “leaping” and what is a “gorge”? Little did I know that I would one day actually visit this place myself. The hike to the Tiger Leaping Gorge is one of the must do activities here in Yunnan. It features some of the most amazing scenery in the province. People would often try to tackle the Tiger Leaping Gorge as a two or three day hike. I won’t be as adventurous, maybe if I have someone with me I would be more willing to do that multi-day hike.
The hike begins at the Tiger Leaping Gorge Town or Qiaotou. You first pay the entrance fee to the scenic area and off you go. One might be tempted to skirt the entrance fee but there are guards at the entrance to the road leading to the gorge. It seems I would be walking alone today. Honestly, I had no idea where I was going, but most of the tourists seem to be going the same way. I don’t think I would get lost here since all I have to do is just follow the Yangtze river, eventually it will have to lead to the gorge, won’t it? However, there is this thing nagging me, the Yangtze River is the second longest river in the world, a mistake here would be a costly mistake.
