I usually plan my overseas trips far in advance, especially so if it is going to be a long flight to take advantage of cheaper fares. However because of circumstances, I had to go on a trip to what used to be my second home, Singapore. I spent many years roaming the streets of Singapore and I have a lot of good memories of the country. While a lot has changed over the years, I can see that a lot has also stayed the same. Feelings of nostalgia flow through me as I wander these streets once more. It feels like I know this place like the back of my hand.
Having lived in Singapore for several years, I made many friends along the way. I large part of this trip would involve meeting a lot of these old friends which would of course involve eating! When I first came to the country, I didn’t really like the food. Probably because I was only buying the cheapest stuff. I always thought that the food wasn’t tasty at all and they needed to put chili on everything just to give it some taste. Ultimately, I got to learn where not to buy these tasteless food and of course, if you want better tasting food, you have to spend a little more money.
I met up with friends at a place near the Central business District which surprisingly I’m not too familiar with. My work office was outside the city center and I never really got the chance to go to the central business district all that much. Apparently, our meeting place is an old place which I never heard of – Kok Sen. This is a restaurant which serves local food. I thought this was perfect since I was craving for exactly this kind of food. You don’t to eat like this a lot in Europe and I would take every chance I get to eat here.
In Singapore, you know a place is popular when there is a queue outside it. Kok Sen had a said queue and the place filled up extremely quickly even if they only just opened. As you might expect, the food was excellent, we ordered an assortment of food. Prawn paste chicken, roast pork with kailan were all lovely and I wolfed everything down. What was unique was this yong tau foo which was different from any yong tau foo which I had here. This was a dry type and ultimately more presentable and tastier than the ones I would have at the hawker centers. Again, you get what you pay for. My friends couldn’t eat that much and I ultimately finished everything myself. I was hoping not to fill myself up too much since I would still have to eat dinner later. Maybe the heat will help my digest all these food faster. It was an excellent start to my trip. Oh, great to meet up with my friends too!
