The trouble with traveling in the winter is that days are shorter. This can be good and bad but at least in this instance, I wanted to go from town of Werfen back to the city of Salzburg, while it technically is only mid-afternoon, I know that the sun would be going down soon and I don’t want to be stuck here in Werfen. With the heavy snowfall here I wouldn’t know if train service would suddenly get cancelled. I would like to believe there is a lot more to Werfen that what I just saw.
While I was having lunch, I came to learn through the staff that there are other places to see here in town. There is a large castle here that rises above the town. It should not come as a surprise to know that the castle itself was also used as a film location. I did see the castle even as I was entering the town of Werfen. I could also see it from the Sound of Music film location even as it is covered in thick snow. Unfortunately, the castle didn’t seem to be open in the winter, so I would just to leave it for another visit.
Apart from the castle, there are also ice caves here. They claim to be the largest ice caves in the world though it doesn’t really matter to me right now because they are inaccessible. I thought it was weird that the caves would not be open for visitors in the winter but I guess there would be a lot of walking involved and it might not be best to let people do that in the winter. It is unfortunate, since an ice cave is something that would interest me.
