I was heading back to the city center after going to the outskirts of the old town. It was visibly more quiet there so I just head back to the center. I knew that I would be able to see something historical just by randomly walking there. I was correct. The center was packed with historical sites. It would be impossible to miss them. I naturally gravitated to the more prominent ones – the churches. They were much easier to spot and I was sure to arrive at a centuries old structure if I do that. I arrived at what seemed to be a rather spacious area. There was a church with a large square in front of it. It wasn’t the cathedral but it seemed to be important since it had its own square.
This place turned out to be the Abbey of Saint Peter. The abbey is considered to be the oldest in the German speaking world. It’s history dates back to the seventh century, though the church was “only” built in 1130. This certainly makes it the oldest church in Salzburg. However, looking at the church, you might not be able to tell that it is that old. You can say that the church is so old that it has been remodeled several times that you can’t tell that it is almost a thousand years old. By the time I got there, the weather had taken a turn for the worse and it was the perfect time for me to go in the church if only to keep dry. I might as well take some photos while I am at it.
