The Franciscan Chruch in Salzubrg is one of the more prominent buildings in the city. More specificially, it has a tall tower that can be easily seen from afar. The strangely unnamed church is one of the older structures in the city. It is even older than the nearby cathedral and that says a lot since the current structure was already a newer structure. Churches have a nasty tendency to burn down every hundred years, and this Franciscan Church was no different. The latest structure was completed in 1498. Though the church looked very uninviting since it was so dark, I still went inside to have a look.
The Franciscan Church is a Gothic church and it shows. Perhaps they started with darkness. Gothic churches tend to be darker. And it doesn’t help that there isn’t much light coming in from the outside since it was about to rain. The Franciscan Church may not be as big as the nearby cathedral but the interiors are excellent. One may have a little difficulty appreciating it since it was that dark but give your eyes a little time to adjust to the darkness and you can see one of the most beautiful churches in the Salzburg. I noticed that a lot of the chapels here are protected by fences. I would imagine that this was to protect the centuries old items that can be found here. I think the experience would be a little better if there was a bit more lighting here though.
