Thoughts on the Salzburg Cathedral

Inside the Salzburg Cathedral

The Salzburg Cathedral is one of the most impressive churches in the city of Salzburg. You can probably say that the cathedral is the heart of the city since the prince archbishops stay here in Salzburg. It is no wonder that they wished that a beautiful church be built here. One of the claims to fame of Salzburg Cathedral was that this was also where the genius composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was baptized. I guess this is natural since this was the city where he was born in. While the cathedral is still in active use as a place of worship, parts of the cathedral were turned into a museum, of which I had already visited the previous day.

The cathedral is also one of the first cathedrals that I saw which has three squares – one in front and two on each side. This gives the cathedral a lot of space. In fact two of the squares have been turned into a Christmas market for the holidays. This makes the church even more of place to meet more than ever. The city of Salzburg basically revolves around the cathedral. The other monument – the Hohensalzburg Fortress isn’t as accessible as the cathedral. This makes the cathedral the natural center of the city.
