It was my first day in the elegant city of Salzburg and I seemed to have succeeded in visiting quite a few of the important places here in the city. The Historic Center of the City of Salzburg is a UNESCO World Heritage site and there are multiple sites included in the listing. I don’t plan to going to all of them in a single day. I have a few days to spare here in Salzburg so I believe I can afford to take it slower. Salzburg will be my last stop which means that I don’t need to go anywhere else anymore. I just visited the imposing Hohensalzburg Fortress which looms above the city as well as the Salzburg Residenz which was used by the archbishop at that time.
By the time I was finished touring, it was already night time. I even managed to squeeze in the visit to the fortress just before closing time and was back down the hill just in time for dinner. Being the fourth largest city of Austria, the city is quite cosmopolitan. Though I plan on eating local stuff as much as I can help it. I found this place not too far away from the cathedral called Zwettler’s Wirsthaus. The restaurant is an Austrian Restaurant and it seems to have been in business since 1863. If it lasted that long, then I think they must be doing something right.
By this time, I was trying to avoid eating schnitzel as much as I can. It seems that all restaurants serve that and honestly, I don’t think it is worth the asking price considering what it is. This time, I got myself some braised ox tail. I don’t know how local this dish actually it, but at least it isn’t schnitzel again. The ox tail was nice, hearty and tender and it is great for cold weather like it was that night. Of course, I got some myself some Kaiser Karl Beer. I enjoyed my visit to Zwettler’s Wirsthaus and I think I can understand how it stayed in business since 1863.
