The Hohensalzburg Fortress is considered as one of the largest castles in the world. This made me worried when I decided to go to visit the fortress late in the afternoon. While I was warned that it is almost closing time, I thought that I think I would have enough time to see the entire place and be out before it closes. After a few distractions outside the fortress walls, it was finally time to go inside the main building. It is still amazing to think that this place was meant to house the archbishop and not a king and would normally be the case. At that time, the church had power much like kings and they also had enemies like kings. For this reason, the fortress was constructed to protect the archbishop as well as serve as their residence when needed.
The fortress as you might expect is rather old compared to the more modern Salzburg Residenz beside the cathedral. For what it is, the fortress was comfortable and spacious. The fortress was expanded several times over the years and until they run out of hill to expand to. After all, the whole point of building it on top of a hill was because there was an advantage when you have the higher ground. If you expand all the way to the bottom of the hill, then you lose the higher ground altogether. Obviously, the fortress has since been turned into a museum. I don’t think I would be able to see every single thing here but at least I should be able to see the most important spots.
