The Hohensalzburg Fortress is one of the major landmarks in the city of Salzburg. It is rather hard to miss since it rises up above the rest of the city as it was built on top of a hill. The fortress was continually expanded over the centuries and it is considered to be one of the largest castles in Europe. It is also included as part of the UNESCO World Heritage site listing of the Historic Center of City of Salzburg. I entered the fortress close to closing time, which means that I needed to hurry to be able to see the castle. I was intending to see the interior of the castle first because those parts are the ones which will be closed to visitors.
The Hohensalzburg Fortress, like any other fortress, is surrounded by walls. For tourists, it has been made easier to go through the walls through some gates. The gates would then lead to what is considered to be an inner town. Think of it as a tiny town within the fortress itself. While this may come as a surprise, for a fortress this large, I think it was inevitable that something like this emerges. I can see that there is a small church here and I can imagine how there can be a small tavern here as well. While it doesn’t have the overall elegance of a Salzburg, it does have the look a feel of a medieval town.
