The Salzburg Cathedral Museum is part of the Salzburg Residenz tour. I was pleased to see that this was included and I think it sort of makes sense. The Salzburg Residenz was the residence of the archbishop but curiously, I didn’t see too many religious artifacts. There would be the paintings and odd statue here and there but it is nothing what I imagined an archbishop of the time would have. The Salzburg Cathedral Museum sort of makes up for that by having a museum within the cathedral itself. Here, most of the items on display here would be religious in nature. It is not a huge museum and their collection is basically taken from various other collections since the museum itself was only established in 1974.

There is a section of the museum which is called the Cabinet of Curiosities. As the name implies, this would be a cabinet filled with various items. I guess these would be items which would be too small to exhibit by itself lest it be lost or stolen. The items here on display are on loan from other collections. Because this museum is so new, it can only be approximated as to what these cabinets would have contained. I actually thought they did a good job since I wouldn’t have known about this until I read about it. It was a little difficult to appreciate the items on display anyway since everything was all locked inside a cabinet.
