Inside the Salzburg Cathedral

I was surprised that the tour of the Salzburg Residenz brought us out of the building itself. I was confused and wondered if that was actually the end of the tour. It struck me as weird that we will just be let loose outside after walking through the entire archbishop’s palace. The path actually brought us outside the palace and through a path which overlooks the Residenzplatz which at the time houses a lively Christmas market. It turns out that it wasn’t really the end of the tour. It seems the walkway itself connects directly to the nearby cathedral, which makes a lot of sense in this case because the archbishop would have better access to the cathedral.

When I found myself outside the residence, there was a bit of freezing rain and I couldn’t really linger much even if I wanted to. There is no other way but to move towards the church and this was obvious what was intended. Visitors coming from the walkway would end up at what is the choir loft overlooking the congregation. I think this is one of the best views one can get of a cathedral and it seems to be limited to visitors to the Salzburg Residenz. The baroque cathedral it quite nice but I think it has a more subdued and traditional design compared to the cathedral in Innsbruck which looks like a painting turned into a church. There were no services at the time of my visit so I could take all the photos that I wanted.
