The Salzburg Residenz was primarily used as the residence of the archbishop. It was then gradually expanded over the years to its current size. Along the way, it was also used as the residence of the Emperor of Austria, then finally as the museum it is now. Compared to other European palaces, the Salzburg Residenz is less over the top, and personally, I find the interiors very tasteful. I also like how the design is quite uniform which will make you forget that it was built over the course of several years. I don’t know if this was intentional but the colors of the interiors are primarily red and white which incidentally match the colors of the modern Austrian national flag.
As you would expect in a palace like this, there are a lot of rooms to see here. A lot of these rooms have various uses and also different stories to them. Although I was supposedly listening to the free audio guide that came with the tour, I don’t remember a single thing about it. Perhaps I was just trying to get the visit over with since a lot of the rooms tend to look a like. The rooms have a uniform design so they tend to look a like. I think it this is different from a visit to a Palace of Versailles where every room is over the top that the rooms start to look a like even if they really don’t. One thing which I did get from the feel of the palace is that parts of the residence feel like they belong in a church. This is probably not surprising since the main user of the building is the archbishop.
