The Salzburg Residenz is part of the Salzburg Cathedral complex in the heart of the city of Salzburg. At the time the city of Salzburg is the seat of the archbishop and along with that came the cathedral and the archbishop’s palace. The Old Residenz is one of the important landmarks here in the city and it has since been turned into a museum. Curiously, the entrance to the residence was not that easy to find. Maybe people normally go in the cathedral first before going to the palace. When I visited the Innsbruck imperial palace the previous day, photos weren’t allowed. The explanation given me was that it is because a private company manages the museum and they don’t want photos taken. This annoyed me no end. I don’t know how the locals feel if they are not allowed to take photos of their history but I think it is taking it a little too far.
Anyway, it seems that photos are allowed in the Salzburg Residenz, so I was pleased with that. The palace actually started from much more humble beginnings compared to the huge building that is seen now. The current palace is the result of continued expansion of the bishop’s residence to its current size. Eventually when Salzburg was secularized, the palace became and imperial residence of the Austrian Emperor. Eventually, it was turned into a museum and it is open to the public for a fee of course. I dread it whenever I visit these types of palaces because it can turn out to be too much of a good thing, just like how it was when I visited other grand European palaces, I will have to see if this will turn out like that this time.
