I finally arrived at the city of Salzburg. Long time readers of this blog won’t be surprised to know that this is a UNESCO World Heritage site. There are several sites here in the city which are included in the listing and I was hoping to get to visit them. Because there are several of them, I decided to spend a little more time here in the city instead of the surrounding area. Besides, I already went outside Salzburg at the start of this trip, this was just the icing on the cake.
Salzburg, like a lot of European cities, is a historical city. Although, unlike the city of Innsbruck which I visited just the previous day, Salzburg was never an imperial capital. Instead, it was the seat of the archbishop. As it was during those times, the church had immense power, sometimes even greater than the ones held by kings or emperors. As a result, they tend to accumulate a lot of wealth. Some examples of this riches can be seen in the huge and beautiful cathedrals that are built in these cities. Sometimes there will be palatial residences of the archbishop which rival those of actual royalty. Salzburg has one of these palaces. It is called the Salzburg Residenz or the Alte Residenz or Old Residence. This is part of the cathedral complex in the heart of Salzburg. I intend to visit these monuments, hopefully, I would have better luck than I got when I visited the Innsbruck palace just the previous day.
