I arrived in the city of Salzburg at around noon and I was able to quickly check in to the hotel and leave my stuff there. This gave me a lot of time to just wander around the city. This also means that I got there just in time for lunch. At that time, I was feeling a little stingy and I thought that maybe I should save my money for a better dinner. This was because I knew that there will be Christmas markets in the city center and I won’t be lacking for affordable places to eat at. The city center was just a bus ride away and I was there within minutes.
There were three Christmas markets near the Mozartplatz alone and that should be enough choices for me to pick from. A lot of the food here in the Christmas market are quite familiar, especially since I was in Germany the previous year. Again, unsurprisingly, there is a lot of German influence here not only in language but also with regards to food. I picked something which I haven’t had before, leberkässemmel. This is actually made of two words, leberkäse which is the filling and semmel is the bun itself. The leberkäse looks and tastes a lot like a meat loaf and you probably won’t be wrong. It is ground meat which is made into the shape of a meat loaf. I pointed at it and I was given a sandwich. It was rather boring to look at with just the meat loaf and the bread. For drinks, I pushed everything down with the piping hot glühwein – remembering to return the mug to get some of my money back.
