I finally arrived in the city of Salzburg and although I have passed through the city a couple of times previously, this time, I will be here for a few days and visit places around the city. Undoubtedly, the most important place here Salzburg is the old town. I know, I have visited several old European towns but I still each one would be unique and I was hoping to find out what makes Salzburg different from the rest. The Historic Center of the City of Salzburg is, after all, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The historic center of Salzburg is rather large and just from the river Salzach, I can already see how much walking I would need to do to see the city. When I got to the center, I quickly found out that there are several Christmas markets in the city. Yes, the hotel staff already told me of the Christmas markets in Salzburg but it is also good to actually know where they are. I was in the middle of one of the major markets in the city when I noticed that there was an ice skating rink here. This wasn’t one of those synthetic ice ones that I have seen elsewhere. I know that those would be more economical to operate compared to an actual ice one but it is still nice to a real one for a change.

Unfortunately, I don’t think it was cold enough to keep the ice frozen. The air temperature was way above freezing and you can already see pools of water forming on the surface. I have never skated in such conditions but I don’t think it can be good, especially if you fell. As the day went on, the temperature eventually did go down to close to freezing which made skating much better. As the climate warms, I am thinking that there will be less and less of the actual ice skating rinks. It is a shame that maybe centuries from now, our descendants can only imagine how it is that we were able to skate on actual ice.
