The previous night, I was up the Town Tower of Innsbruck and just appreciating the view. It was one of the tallest structures in the city so it was easy to look around. There were several prominent buildings around the area but one that stood out the most was a church. I didn’t know if it was because it was just nearby but it seemed to be quite large. This turned out to be the Innsbruck Cathedral also known as Dom Saint Jakob. The cathedral is one of the most important structures in the city as well as Tyrol itself.
The cathedral is a magnificent baroque cathedral. I think the together with the gothic style, the baroque style of lends itself more to grand structures. I have been to several baroque churches and they tend to be very flamboyant. The Innsbruck Cathedral is the same. It looks like there was nothing spared in building this cathedral. Every square inch of the cathedral seems to have been designed beautifully. One can tell that this church was built to impress. All the more reason that the imperials wanted to be associated with this cathedral. In my opinion the cathedral is much more worth visiting compared to the imperial palace next door. This beautiful church is like a painting turned into a church.
