A zoo was the last thing I expected to see when I visited the Nordkette mountains. However, it turns out that the Alpenzoo here at the foot of the Nordkette mountains is a unique one. It features animals which can be found in this region. Keep in mind that this region of Europe is mountainous so you might not see the typical animals that you would see normally. I know that I am woefully unprepared for this visit since I didn’t bring my telephoto lens with me. I didn’t think that I would be visiting a zoo of all places here on a visit to a mountain.
The Alpenzoon spans several hectares and it is surprisingly well built zoo. I know I have been to zoos we more charismatic animals but I think considering the type of animals they have here, I think I would at least want to see what they have. The zoo employs a more modern idea of a zoo. That is have a very large enclosure so the animals would be able to move around as if it was their natural habitat. Of course, there are practical limitations to the size of these enclosures but at least to my eyes, they seem to be large enough for most of the animals.
