I didn’t find Hungerburg to be very interesting. There was a simple Christmas market near the station but that was basically it. I’m sure that there is probably more to see here in this area, but if there was, they weren’t doing a good job advertising it. What is interesting though I actually already been to the moment I stepped out of the funicular. It was the funicular station itself. I have seen photos of the Hungerburg Funicular station and its very unique architecture but I never really bothered to find out where it was. It was only when I decided to go to the Top of Innsbruck that I found out that the unique structure is actually part of the funicular system.
The station’s roof is basically this giant sculpture. It is meant to evoke glaciers and their shapes. The design was made by famous architect Zaha Hadid. The one at Hungerburg station was on which feels like one is going through an ice tunnel. I have seen photos of ice tunnels and they look amazing. Hungerburg Funicular station isn’t the only one which has this design. The other stations also have variations of it, though, Hungerburg station probably the largest structure.
