I took a train from the city of Salzburg to the city of Innsbruck in Tyrol. By the time, I arrived at Innsbruck, it was almost noon and of course it was almost time for lunch. I quickly head to my hotel for the next few days to check in or at least leave my bigger bag and head out for lunch. As you might expect, most of the restaurants in the city would be at the old town and I was given several of them to try out for the next few days. I was hoping that I would get to try local food, but I will have to see how I will manage this.
I followed the River Inn and eventually ended up at the old town of Innsbruck. It difficult to miss since there was a lively Christmas market right outside it. I decided that I would have a proper meal here instead of just eating at the Christmas market. I don’t have too many days here in the city and I would like to try several food if I can. I was recommended the Restaurant Stiftskeller Innsbruck which is a traditional tavern serving local food. I was specifically recommended the Tiroler Gröstl which as the name implies is a regional specialty here in Tyrol.
Gröstl is a result of the local environment here in Tyrol. As you can see it is very mountainous so the ingredients used here are whatever is available, thus the food here tends to be quite simple. Gröstl is basically boiled meat and roasted potatoes topped with egg. Honestly, I wasn’t too impressed with the dish. I doesn’t taste fantastic and it feels like it is something that I can easily cook up, which is probably the point. It is meant to be simple as it fulfills the needs of the people in the region.
The restaurant however, it far more interesting. It looks like this used to be a church before as you can still see the statues that were used before. The interiors don’t look too much like a church anymore as it has already been redone but you can still see parts of the old church. There were a lot of people eating at the time and I can see that this is a popular place. The food is relatively affordable considering it is right in the middle of the old town. To push all that gröstl down, I had myself some beer. The glass does say it is from Munich so I don’t know how authentic this is.
