I had a great day exploring the village of Hallstatt. I decided to spend two nights here so that I would be able to get the most of the experience. I know that the village of Hallstatt is small and many would actually come here as a day trip but they also do so with thousands of other people. By this time, most of the day trippers have left but it was still a bit early in the evening. I finished a little early so I thought that I go back to the guest house to rest a bit. Fortunately, I didn’t have to walk very far since my accommodation is just at the market square of the village.
Of course, I didn’t really exert that much going around the village but it is also nice to be able to just kick back and enjoy time not rushing from one place to another. I could have saved at least a day had I just done this as a day trip but didn’t consider it in the end. If I have one thing to say about Hallstatt, is that there isn’t much in the way of food here. While there are a few restaurants here, mostly along the main stretch, there is not a lot of them. This is probably because the size of the village doesn’t allow for it. Imagine what happens to all the restaurants if there were no tourists. The local population won’t be able to support a large number of restaurants. Anyway, it is still good that most of the visitors here are just day-trippers. I don’t have to worry too much about where to eat.
That evening I went to this restaurant called Brau Gasthof Hallstatt. From the name, I can tell that this is or was a brewery. It is a restaurant attached to a guest house along the main street of the village. I passed by this restaurant multiple times and it is now time to go in. Prices here in the village aren’t cheap and Brau Gasthof Hallstatt is no exception. For these prices, I didn’t want to have schnitzel. I though to get something more local. One thing which keeps popping up in signs is trout. One would expect that the trout would be caught here in the lake but I don’t know if that is true. I don’t see much fishing going on here but maybe because of the small number of restaurants here, there isn’t any need for industrial fishing.
The fish was okay, it is basic grilled fish with potatoes. The fish itself wasn’t anything special and honestly, I thought it was expensive for what it is. Perhaps the price of eating fish caught from the Hallstatter See is really that much. To push the fish down, I had their house beer. Another family happened to sit on table next to mine and one of them kept hitting me, knowingly or unknowingly. It got so bad that I had to change seats. I thought that it was impossible that the person did not know that I was already getting hit. I decided not to make a scene about it and ruin my last dinner in Hallstatt. Hopefully, that didn’t ruin my impression of the restaurant.
