Film Showing Area at the Inner Chamber of the Salzwelten Hallstatt

Our tour at the Salzwelten Hallstatt brought us to a chamber within the salt mine. The chamber is one which is right after the miner’s slide. While there are some salt crystals here to appreciate, the main point of this stop is a film showing. There is a small auditorium where people can sit and watch the film. The film as you may expect is all about how the history of the salt mine. In particular, this one is about how the mine came about. If you think about it, how did people find out about the huge salt deposits deep in the mountains if they were buried that much. Why would the people of Hallstatt at that time climb up the mountain behind the village and spend weeks mining for salt.

The film actually shows all that and all without any words to save on translation. Back then, there was no water from the tap. You can see how the local environment of Hallstatt has access to a lot of fresh water. However, while doing some foraging or hunting, people had to get a drink of water somewhere only to discover that the water was salty. The people concluded that there was something that was making the water salty and eventually found the massive deposit of salt here in the mountains. One man can’t possibly do all the mining so the village was enlisted to perform various roles when salt mining. Some people would be assigned to hack at the rock. Some people would be assigned to bring food. Some people would be assigned to carry the U-shaped rocks out for processing. This system eventually gave birth to the salt industry which provided much wealth and prosperity to this region of Austria.
