We were all led outside the visitor center of the Salzwelten Hallstatt. It was cold outside but we still have our winter wear with the miner’s clothes on top of them. The Christina Tunnel is our main access point and our guide wasted no time in starting the tour. The Salzwelten Hallstatt is the considered to be the oldest salt mine in the world with seven thousand years of history. Such is the importance of Hallstatt that there was even a culture that was named after it. But I am getting ahead of myself. We followed our guide into the Christina Tunnel which was wide enough to probably fit a small train which hauls salt. There was no train at the time but the mere presence of the tracks here at the Christina Tunnel implies that there is at least one that it used for that purpose.

Annoyingly, I felt that I didn’t have much time to take photos here as it felt like we were being herded from one place to another. Our guide would describe certain spots along the way but we always continue on and it made it difficult to take photos. As you can see, my only photo of the tunnel is blurry since I didn’t even have enough time to stop. While, it is unlikely to get separated from your tour group. Visitors have to keep in mind that there are more then 60 kilometers of tunnels that were dug over the centuries but the tour will only allow visitors access to two kilometers of that. Not a trivial distance but still something to keep in mind.
