The Salzwelter Hallstatt, is the “other” attraction to visit here in Hallstatt, with the beautiful scenery usually attracting more attention over anything else. However, it is because of the historical significance of the area that Hallstatt was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Salzwelter Hallstatt in the all in one place to visit to learn more about this. Honestly, I primarily went to Hallstatt for the scenery, while I was aware of the historical significance, I didn’t know if there was even a way to visit it. That is what the Salzwelter Hallstatt is for.

The Salzwelter Hallstatt is actually located on top of the mountain that is behind Hallstatt village. There is a ticketing office at the foot of the mountain just behind the village. Visitors will need to take a funicular to go to the top. Actually, the funicular part is optional, if you want to challenge yourself, you can walk all the way up. There was a path which lets you do this but I don’t think I am in any condition to do that, let alone have several hours to do the walk. Perhaps in another time where I would actually spend several days here, I think it would be nice walk up. For the vast majority of us, it is the funicular.

I got to the funicular station early and there were hardly any people there. But there was enough people that I wasn’t able to get the best spot in the car, which is the bottom row. The car itself is tilted because of the extreme slope which that funicular needs to climb. While the car itself is tilted, the inside is still level to the ground. The car even adjusts as the slope changes which I thought was impressive. The funicular departs at regular times but just be aware what the last time of departure of the funicular would be. There is a sign near the funicular station at the top to remind people of this. If you miss the last trip, it would be long and dark walk down the mountain.
