Like any other major archeological park. Hierapolis was a treasure trove of artifacts from past empires. Hierapolis was known as a spa center primarily because of the waters from the nearby Pamukkale which produce supposedly healing waters which patrons would come here for. Back then, Hierapolis had several baths which were naturally heated by geological processes. The result is a very lively city that people far and wide would visit. This is not unlike modern day tourism except that it takes much longer to get to. I would imagine employees would need to take several weeks off just to be able to visit this place.
The archeological museum has two buildings where artifacts found in Hierapolis are displayed. A lot of the items on display are small, such as coins. This seems to be a common artifact that would be found in ruins like these. I always wonder why coins are so common in museums like these. Coins would be something considered valuable and thus people won’t be carelessly leaving them wherever. I don’t think Hierapolis was a city that was wiped out suddenly that people wouldn’t have time to collect their belongings. There are other items here like pottery and stuff but I wasn’t really that interested since I really just wanted to leave and catch the bus back to Istanbul.
