Pamukkale in the city of Denizli is best known for its white travertine terraces which earned a place in the UNESCO World Heritage list. I thought it was all good but then I started to find out some stuff which are not that publicized. Walking here barefoot can be quite a pain, so if you are not used to going barefoot, it would be best if you can find something to protect your feet without them being shoes. I saw some touts using water shoes but I don’t know if that is really allowed. I assume they are okay since they would have been barred from entering the grounds if they weren’t. As you might expect most people would end up at the top of the hill. It wasn’t that high anyway, just a bit of a pain to walk up.

At the very end of the path, past the water filled terraces, will be a wooden walkway. You can see people putting their shoes on. I was thus relieved from having to walk around like this the whole morning. From there, it was much easier to go around. You can also see that the place isn’t really that large and given proper footwear, it would be very easy to cover in an hour. The walkway covers much of the top which made me think that they should have built a walkway to keep people away from the travertine terraces. I am sure that people will still come here because of that and I think in the long run it would be more effective in protecting the area.
