By the time I got back to the Darmstadt City Center, it was already midafternoon. By this time, people were already out on the streets. It could be because it wasn’t as cold as it was in the morning anymore but there area visibly more people outside now. I ended up at what seems to be the commercial center of the city. This means that there are shops all around. It was December when I visited and people were surely out trying to do their Christmas shopping as well. The streets were pedestrianized so it was actually very pleasant walking here. The street was a little more modern than I hoped as I was expecting to be walking around in a centuries old city center that is now populated with shops.
While the city center would be certainly old, I have no doubt that Darmstadt was also severely damaged during the war but it seems that not a lot of buildings were restored to how they were before. The important monuments were restored alright but the old houses and shops didn’t seem to have gotten the same treatment. It was a shame since Darmstadt is proud to be considered an artsy city but decision made back then left a lot of buildings rebuilt with ordinary architecture.
