Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt has got to be one of the more unique places that I have visited. Mathildenhöhe is also known as the Darmstadt Artists’ Colony. As the name implies, it is a place where artists lived and worked on their art. Some of them resulted in interesting architecture which is visible in the park. There are also houses around the area which were used by the artists but more on that later. The most prominent landmark here is the wedding tower but apart from that I would be hard pressed to find something interesting. Maybe it was because I was tired from the trip and I wasn’t feeling up to it but this place didn’t feel as interesting as I thought it would be.
I would think of Mathildenhöhe as a large park where there would be houses around it. The Russian Orthodox Chapel is in the middle of the park and it is a rather unique structure here. That says a lot because I thought that the structures here were already unique to begin with. I would even argue that the chapel is the most traditional of the structures here except for the fact that this is in Germany, not Russia. There is a pool in front of the chapel but at this time of the year, the pool seems to be almost frozen if not already.
